Digital expert meeting when the IPCC's evaluation report is to be completed

Work is currently underway on the final draft of the UN IPCC's Sixth Evaluation Report, AR6. The main authors in working group III, who assess how climate change can be limited, will meet completely digitally this year. IVL researcher Erika Mata is one of 280 participants from about 70 countries.

– The meeting is absolutely crucial for understanding, discussing and addressing the extensive and very important feedback that the report has received so far, says Erika Mata, lead author of Chapter 9, Buildings.

During the open review period at the beginning of the year, more than 30,000 comments were received from more than 850 expert reviewers and government representatives. Working Group III will next send its final draft to governments for further comment on the summary for policy makers.

The ongoing main writers' meeting is led by the Italian government, but, as last year, takes place completely digitally.

– Despite the pandemic, we have made great progress with the report and the large participation in the review process testifies to the great interest that still exists for the climate issue, says Erika Mata.

The IPCC Working Group III is responsible for assessing measures and solutions to the threat of dangerous climate change by reducing emissions and increasing the carbon footprint of the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming.

The sixth evaluation report (AR6) assesses constraint options in energy, agriculture, forestry and land use, buildings, transport and industry and considers these in the context of sustainable development. For the first time, the report will examine the link between greenhouse gas emissions and consumption and behavior, as well as the role of innovation and technology.

The latest evaluation report was completed in 2014 and made important scientific contributions to the Paris Agreement. AR6 should be ready by 2022.

On 28 April, there is an additional opportunity to take part in the IPCC's work through a digital event with, among others, researchers from working group III and various authorities.
